Strava · Merge activities
Merge two Strava activities
into one.
Battery died halfway, hit stop by accident, or recorded a ride in two parts? Strava can't merge separate activities itself. A detour via GPX does the job, in a few minutes.
Step by step
How to merge Strava activities
You export the separate parts, merge them into one GPX and put that back on Strava as a new activity.
-
1
Export each part as GPX
Open the first activity on strava.com, click the three dots (⋯) and choose ‘Export GPX’. Do the same for every other part.
-
2
Merge the files
Drop all GPX files into the Route Frame merge tool and put them in order. Click merge and download the new GPX.
-
3
Delete the separate activities
Otherwise Strava treats the upload as a duplicate activity. Copy what you want to keep first — title, description, photos — then delete the separate parts.
-
4
Upload the merged GPX
On strava.com, click the plus icon at the top right, choose ‘Upload activity’ and then ‘File’. Select the GPX you just downloaded.
-
5
Complete the activity again
Add back the title, description, sport type and your bike or shoes. Strava recalculates segments on its own.
Tip: exporting works best on the Strava website on a computer; the option is tucked away in the app.
What you lose
Merging via GPX is a detour, and it comes at a cost. Know this before you delete the originals.
-
Kudos and comments
They belong to the separate activities and disappear when you delete them. Strava can't move them over.
-
Heart rate, power and cadence
The merge tool only carries position, elevation and time. If your training log relies on sensor data, it will be missing from the new activity.
-
Title, photos and gear
An uploaded GPX starts blank. You add the title, description, photos and your bike or shoes back yourself.
-
The gap between parts
If a stretch in between wasn't recorded, the route joins the end of one part to the start of the next. Elapsed time includes the break.

Frequently asked questions
-
Can Strava merge activities itself?
No. Strava has no button to merge activities and points to external tools itself. Hence the detour: export, merge and upload again.
-
Why do I have to delete the separate activities first?
The merged file contains the same timestamps as the parts already on Strava, so Strava sees it as a duplicate. Delete the originals first; Strava recommends that too.
-
Do I get my segments back?
Yes. Strava recalculates segments on every upload from the times in the file, and those times are kept when merging.
-
Are my heart rate and power data kept?
No. The merged file contains position, elevation and time. The tool doesn't carry over heart rate, power or cadence. If that data matters to you, this route isn't the right choice.
-
Can I do this on my phone?
Exporting is easiest on the Strava website on a computer; the option is tucked away in the app. The merge tool itself works on a phone too.
-
Does this work for Garmin Connect too?
Yes. Export each activity on connect.garmin.com via the gear icon (⚙) as GPX, merge them and put the new GPX back with Garmin Connect's import feature. Heart rate and power don't carry over there either.
-
Does it cost anything?
No. Merging and downloading is free, and you don't need an account. Route Frame makes its money on posters: if you want a poster of the merged ride, you can make one from the same screen.
